Carol Harris Cowen

Carol Harris Cowen was called home from her earthly journey on April 15, 2019. She faithfully served her community of Roanoke Rapids in many capacities since her arrival.

Born on March 11, 1944, in Elizabeth City, NC to the late James Erskin Harris and Geneva Harris Royston, she spent her childhood in Nags Head, NC. Carol graduated from Peace High School and Peace College. Throughout her teaching career she continued her own education. She accomplished many avenues, from teaching up to being a principal and retiring as Assistant Superintendent of the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District. She held a wide range of study interests, completing many degrees from numerous colleges and universities.

Carol was the past recipient of the ECU Distinguished Alumni Award. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Carol and her longtime friends from an unforgettable generation, Doris Tew and the late Nita Cochran, enjoyed sharing lessons that were not always in the books. Their passion was to always put children first.

After retirement from the school system, Carol served as a member of the Roanoke Rapids City Council, an honor she truly enjoyed. Carol was a longtime member of Rosemary United Methodist Church.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, William Henry "Bill" Cowen, and her grandson, William Davis "Billy" Aikins.

She is survived by her daughter, EvaLu Cowen and grandson Henry Cowen "Skip" Aikins, of Danville, VA; her sisters, Anna Harris Evan (Steve), and Kay Harris Holt, both of Nags Head, NC; four nieces, two nephews, and one great-niece. Included in her loved ones are, Carol Clark Dean, husband David, and their children, Alex and Bryan of Roanoke Rapids. Carol also enjoyed her special love and friendship with companion Wallace Brown. Carol had many friends, was a beloved mother and grandmother to her own and many others.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to: Camp Sea Gull and Rosemary United Methodist Church, 900 Jackson Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 or an organization of your choice.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 19, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Rosemary United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Rev. Steve McElroy officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m.
